HALEY HISTORY
Taken from family sketches

Grandfather and Grandmother Haley (William Haley and Elizabeth (Hamm) Haley) were horn in the county of Cornwall, England, about 1807, and were married in 1829. He was the son of Abraham Haley and he was the son of Isaac Haley, which is as far back as any history of the Haley family has record.

Grandmother Haley was the daughter of Thomas and Joanna Hamm. Thomas Hamm was a soldier and fought the battle of Waterloo under Wellington. Our people in England were nearly all soldiers and sailors.

Grandfather and Grandmother Haley became the parents of nine children, seven boys and two girls. Seven of them grew to maturity. In England, Grandfather and Grandmother had decided to emigrate to Australia, but before they could save money enough to pay for the voyage, inducements were sent out by the Canadian government to homeseekers, so Grandfather sent his three eldest children (John, James.and Maria, as they were grown) to Canada to try their luck. This was in the year of 1847 and they sent back a favorable report that they had obtained work, and finally sent back money to bring over the remaining members of the family.

Grandfather and Grandmother sailed with the other children in the month of April in a sailing vessel, and after a long tedious, boisterous voyage of six weeks, during which they encountered a storm that drifted them back 700 miles, finally landed in Quebec, Canada; then taking a river-boat, they went up the St. Lawrence River and landed at Toronto. Meeting the preceding children they went north of Toronto and settled in the county of Durham, township of Darlington. This was in the year of 1849.

After a few years they went farther west in Canada and settled in the county of Perth, only a short distance from London, where some of them took land which was heavily timbered and which had to be cleared before it was available for farming purposes. Before the younger members of the family were old enough to take government land, the land had all been taken. They farmed on rented land, made some money, married and began to raise families and seeing the need of a home of their own, decided to move farther west.

The names of the family that came from England, some of whom later came to Kansas and settled in Ottawa County, were: William and Elizabeth Haley, their children John, William, Marie, James, Isaac, Abraham and Richard. John, James, Isaac, Abe and Dick were all well known in this county.

Isaac and Abe, desiring land, made a trip West as far as Missouri in 1868 to find homestead land, and finding none, they returned as harvest was coming on. In 1870 Isaac and Abe again went West in the month of May in search of land. A report had been sent out by the U.S. Government that there was plenty of homestead land in the West and that Kansas was settling up fast, and the Solomon Valley was highly recommended; so they bought tickets for Solomon City. Arriving at Solomon City, there was no transportation up the valley so they started out on foot and walked as far as Lindsey the first day (which was the county seat) and after a night's rest, they came up to Minneapolis.

On being told that there was still some homestead land a little farther up the valley, they started  out straight north and after going six miles they found a vacant half section, the south half of
