| Several hired men were employed on the Markiey farm the year around. In the winter four hogs and several beeves were slaughtered to keep the family and help in food. Besides Mrs. Markley raised several hundred chickens. A daughter, Louise, was born in 1895. She married Dr. Everett Hinshaw and was the mother of a daughter, Mary Jane. Mrs. Hinshaw died at the age of 30. A son Israel was born in 1896; he remained on the farm after his parents moved to town in 1918. he married Letha Dillinger and a daughter, Betty Lou, blessed their home. Harvey, another son, was horn in 1905. He married Lois Williams and they had six children: Joan, John, Bill, Diana, Lois Lynne and Danny. Mrs. Markley after his death in 1937, lived on in the large brick home which they had built She busies herself hooking rugs and doing fancy work. The Markleys are active in the Episcopal Church of which Mr. and Mrs. Markley were two of the originators. MC CREADY FAMILY HISTORY By Mrs. Merle Neaderhiser John B. McCready, his wife, Sarah, their two sons, Frank and James (who was married), his wife, Mamie, and daughter, Edith, with a maiden sister, Mary Jane, came to Kansas in May, 1888, from Hookstown, Pennsylvania They came to Lindsey where John was to run an elevator. He had traded a mill in Pennsylvania for the elevator, it later burned. John resided in various places in the state of Kansas but spent many years in of Ottawa County. His wife, Sarah, died in 1913, and his sister, Mary Jane, from this time on John made his home with his son, Frank, in the Vine Creek community. He died in August, 1929, at the age of 92. James, his wife, Mamie, and daughter, Edith, came to Lindsey with his parents and lived many years in Ottawa County farming in the eastern part of the county. One daughter, Neva, was born after coming to Kansas. Jim passed away in 1913; his wife, Mamie, and daughter, Neva, moved to Bennington where Mamie lived until her death in 1937. Edith, Mrs. Archie White, her husband and daughters, Jeanne and Phyllis, lived on a farm near Bennington. then moved to town for several years. Archie passed on in 1947, and Edith in 1948. Jeanne, Mrs. Glen Werhan, and her husband live in Salina, They have two children: Coleen, Mrs. Charles Comfort, who with her husband and children, Steven, Greg, Sherry, Brent and Troy, live in Kansas City; Larry with his wife, Mary Ann, and their children, Cindy, Rod and Craig, live in Concordia. Larry is one of the successful high School coaches of this area. Phyliss, Mrs. Rollie Zillioux, her husband and children, Brad and Linda, live in Lawrence, Kansas, Neva worked in the ''Shepard store'' in Bennington until her marriage to Frank Shepard in 1916. They made their home on a farm near Solomon where two sons, Stuart and Max were born. They retired in Chapman several years before Frank's death in 1965. Neva still lives in Chapman with her son, Stuart. Max lives near Chapman with his wife and family. Frank, who was fourteen years of age when he came to Kansas, lived his entire life in Ottawa County. He farmed and handled cattle. In 1896, he was united in marriage to Lucy Buck of Ada. They set up housekeeping on the old Gafford Ranch near the eastern edge of Ottawa County in Durham township. The place is now occupied by Lewis Smiths. At this time all three families: John's, James' and Frank's, lived in the same house. In 1900, Frank and Lucy moved to the Vine Creek community where they raised their family. Six children were born to them: Grace, John, Reva, Francis, Theodore (Ted) and Elizabeth (Bess), Francis died in 1925. GRACE, Mrs. James Cherry, and her husband now live on a farm near Bennington. They have two daughters: Virginia, Mrs. Lee Whitman, her husband and four children: Bill, Virginia Lee, Judy and Sarah, live in Bennington; Geraldine, Mrs. August Dittman, and her husband live at Manhattan. Their son, Keith, his wife, Donna, and daughter, Barbara Ann, live at Pratt, Kansas. JOHN and his wife, Rosalind, live on a farm near Bennington. They have three sons, Frank who with his wife, Jean and their four children, Myron, Beth, Mark and Theodore, live on a farm near Bennington; Max and his wife, Marjorie, with their son, John, and daughter, Margaret, reside in Ottawa, Kansas; and Lyle, his wife, Marie, and two children, Steven and Susan, are residing at Huntsville, Alabama. One daughter, Pauline, Mrs. Kenneth Smith, her husband and three children, Curtis, Cynthia and Chris, live in St. Joseph, Missouri. RETURN NEXT |
